"all born to grow & grown to die"

i'm not sure if the story behind the video is apocryphal or not. i choose to believe it's true. this was shot at a townes van zandt memorial, some months after his early death. no one really knew what anyone else was going to play. no one had heard this song before. it was obviously new. the emotional impact is clear on nancy griffith's face. as far as i'm concerned, this is a once in a life time moment when everything comes together & we're lifted up just when we need it the most.

earle's new album will be out may 12th. it's him doing townes' songs. i've heard him do "rex's blues" & segue that into "ft worth blues." if that's any indication of what the student will do w/to his master, the album will be a treat.

i started doing "poncho & lefty" way back when emmylou's album luxury liner came out. i picked up "if i needed you" from emmylou & don william's version. the rest followed. townes wrote over 30 truly great songs in his life & the rest weren't bad by a long shot. that's a pretty good showing.

if you get a chance, watch the documentary on townes, be here to love me. that covers the life; the music covers the art.
