the lowdown from fat city
from my buddy mark, down fat city way. this incredible lineup doesn't even include what was going on in the bars & clubs around the city during those few weeks. there's a particularly interesting "fest within a fest" called the ponderosa stomp that's been happening now for a few years. their claim to fame is showcasing long forgotten or ignored or hard to categorize music & musicians.
the pics featured here are of jonathan batiste & shamarr allen, two hot young indigenous new orleans players that mark cites as being particularly memorable.
"jones,
here is the rest of my fest schedule. friday 4-26; the ladysmith red lions, roy rogers and the delta rhythm kings, the drive by truckers( i didn't know it but they stayed at our hotel and i fed them that morning), and joe cocker( pretty amazing show for an old guy). sunday 4-28; papa grows funk, robert cray, lil malcolm and the house rockers, pine leaf boys, and earth wind and fire( can't make myself see dave matthews because of the crowds). thursday 5-3; honey island swamp band, little freddie king( very good show), theresa anderson, the subdudes, and emmylou harris(stiil has an amazing voice). friday 5-4; the chillens, clarinet woodshed( very good), danza(some of the same people as the woodshed also very good), marcia ball, bonnie raitt( both very good), tony "the ant" bennett(pretty amazing set by the old crooner). sunday 5-6; johnathan batiste(this kid got a scholarship to julliard, i'm not sure if he has finished yet but this guy is
very talented. we saw him about 4 years ago with trombone shorty at donna's for one of the best shows i've ever seen. nobody in the band was over 18 save one guy who was 19. unfortunately both johnathan and shorty have taken different paths but i'm sure they will play again.) shamarr allen( another youngster who broke in with rebirthlike kermit ruffins, this guy is gonna be real good. he is not afraid to play stuff outside of the usual standards that we hear so much of around here.) allen toussaint(never seen a disappointing show from him). neil young(pretty good set from him but the sound system was having problems while he played, his encore was "a day in the life" absolutely amazing). and then a very uninspiring set from the neville brothers but hey we are all pretty tired by the time this thing winds down. the only rain we had was between the neil young and neville brothers for about 20 minutes and from experience you gotta bring
your gear(we did). all in all a good time was had by all."
