i once saw the standard sheet music to an old jazz standard along w/the musical notation of billie holliday's vocal take on the song. the differences were stunning. that was the first time i really thought about how voices really are instruments & how some of the great vocalists(ella, billie, bennett, dylan)are as brilliant as the great instrumentalists. it's kind of easy to take for granted.
america has pretty much neglected one of its great original contributions to world art, jazz, & the artists who pursued it have paid the price. the race issue is so obvious, i won't bother to mention it.
