embarrassingly, i hadn't heard of pisarro until the great clint eastwood film, the eiger sanction based on a novel by trevanian. i think his students, cezanne & gauguin, had seduced me. the movie came out in 1975, so i can claim simple ignorance i guess. in other words, i was still wet behind the ears.
