lunch for two at the zuni

zuni was the first "california-style" restaurant i went to in sf. it was way back in december 1980(i was still at new college). it was on the winter trip i made that took me to sf(on the day john lennon was shot)& nyc(when the great central park memorial for lennon was held). i want to say that mike & holly were there too & the day ended in a dense wet fog in japantown w/holly tanked & misbehaving. since i don't think holly & i ever officially broke up, it made for some odd moments as the years went by.
anyway, zuni impressed me way back then(i'm not sure judy rogers, venerable head chef now & for many years, was even there yet). the menu from that meal was posted on my refrigerator in gulf breeze until i left there years later.

the highlight of THIS meal: squid stew. so good even ann liked it(she hates seafood). the squid had been stewed in red wine & tomatoes until it was meltingly tender & the tomatoes & herbs had reduced to an ethereal succulence. served w/a fantastic dollop of aioli & toast points.

ann had salad greens w/pistachios & this deliciously perfect pizza, w/homemade salumari.

a grilled berkshire porkchop w/frisee salad, roasted polenta & pickled cherries.

ann's dessert: espresso granita w/whipped cream. this thing pack a very real coffee wallop. for ann, it was a little dish of heaven.

I LOVE Zuni but the 3 times I have eaten there, we could not pass up the famous chicken. I can't believe you ate there in 1980. I just made it there a couple of years ago.
