the best tv political journalist of our time died a year ago today. either the cruelty or mercy of god was proved last year when russert died before the most riveting, exciting presidential campaign had reached the finish line. the cruelty was simply that this most incisive political mind would be taken away w/o knowing how things would historically end. the mercy would be that he got to watch it all from the sidelines, always the best place to see the action. either way, all of us not within the reaches of the heavenly realm have been profoundly bereft.
